Question 1

Is an A1C of 5.7 bad?

Accepted Answer

An A1C of 5.7% is the lower edge of the prediabetes range. It is not diabetes, but it is a useful early warning. Many people bring it back into the usual range with changes to activity, diet and weight, and a recheck in about a year is common.

Question 2

Do I need to fast for an A1C test?

Accepted Answer

Usually not. A1C reflects the past two to three months, so a recent meal has little effect. Your clinician may still ask you to fast if other tests, such as fasting glucose or cholesterol, are drawn at the same time.

Question 3

How fast can A1C go down?

Accepted Answer

Because it reflects about three months of blood sugar, A1C changes slowly. Changes in lifestyle or treatment usually start to show after six to eight weeks, with the full effect at about three months.

Question 4

Can A1C be high without diabetes?

Accepted Answer

Yes, sometimes. Iron deficiency, some hemoglobin variants and other conditions can raise A1C even when glucose is normal. That is why a single result is usually confirmed with a repeat A1C or a glucose test before diabetes is diagnosed.
