Question 1

Is a low MCH always iron deficiency?

Accepted Answer

No. Iron deficiency is the most common cause, but thalassemia trait can produce a similar pattern. Ferritin and iron studies help tell them apart, which matters because iron tablets do not help thalassemia trait.

Question 2

Can vitamin B12 deficiency cause a high MCH?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Low vitamin B12 or folate leads to larger red cells that hold more hemoglobin each, so MCH and MCV rise together.

Question 3

What is the difference between MCH and MCHC?

Accepted Answer

MCH is the amount of hemoglobin per cell; MCHC is how concentrated it is inside the cell. A large cell can have a high MCH but a normal MCHC.

Question 4

Can I raise my MCH with diet?

Accepted Answer

If the cause is low iron, B12 or folate, foods rich in them help, and supplements are often needed. Ask your clinician to confirm the cause first, because too much iron can be harmful.
